This is a fairly easy talk to improvise, considering the variety and beauty of the Qur'anic verses to weave it around - although the very idea of suggesting this variety of meanings is enough to give a lot of muslims apoplexy. Well, they do tend to hold up a bound collection of printed sheets of paper and say "This is the Book in which there is no doubt!" (a mistranslation to start off with, and usually at the service of a certainty of interpretation which goes against the recommendations of the book itself - as well as the nature of human intellect)

ISLAMIC OUTREACH - Lesson Five

Belief in the Books of Revelation

RECAP TO ANGELS

Meaning of Book

Qur'an uses associated words in several contexts

The Book of Creation

The Pen - The signs of God

2.1                             Alif Lam Mim

2.2     That is the Book, wherein is no doubt,
          a guidance to the godfearing

2.3   who believe in the Unseen, and perform the prayer,
      and expend of that We have provided them;

2.4   who believe in what has been sent down to thee
        and what has been sent down before thee,
          and have faith in the Hereafter;

2.5     those are upon guidance from their Lord,
          those are the ones who prosper.

6.38  No creature is there crawling on the earth,
            no bird flying with its wings,
      but they are nations like unto yourselves.
      We have neglected nothing in the Book;
      then to their Lord they shall be mustered.

6.59        With Him are the keys of the Unseen;
                  none knows them but He.
            He knows what is in land and sea;
            not a leaf falls, but He knows it.
            Not a grain in the earth's shadows,
            not a thing, fresh or withered,
            but it is in a Book Manifest.

6.60        It is He who recalls you by night,
            and He knows what you work by day:
            then He raises you up therein, that
            a stated term may be determined;
            then unto Him shall you return,
            then He will tell you of what
                  you have been doing.

6.61  He is the Omnipotent over His servants.
            He sends recorders over you till,
            when any one of you is visited
           by death, Our messengers take him
                  and they neglect not.

6.62        Then they are restored to God
            their Protector, the True. Surely
      His is the judgement; He is the swiftest
                  of reckoners.

10.61       Thou art not upon any occupation,
            neither recitest thou any Koran of it,
            nor do you any work, without that We are
            witnesses over you when you press on it;
            and not so much as the weight of an ant in
            earth or heaven escapes from thy Lord, neither
            is aught smaller than that, or greater, but
                  in a Manifest Book.

11.6        No creature is there crawling on the
            earth, but its provision rests on God;
                  He knows its lodging-place
                  and its repository. All
                  is in a Manifest Book.

11.7              And it is He who created
            the heavens and the earth in six days,
            and His Throne was upon the waters -
            that He might try you, which one of
                  you is fairer in works.

22.70       Didst thou not know that God knows all
            that is in heaven and earth? Surely that
            is in a Book; surely that for God is
                        an easy matter.

35.11             God created you of dust
                  then of a sperm drop,
                  then He made you pairs.
      No female bears or brings forth, save with His knowledge;
            and none is given long life who is given long life
      neither is any diminished in his life, but it is in a Book.
                  Surely that is easy for God.

27.73 Surely thy Lord is bountiful to men; but most of them
                        are not thankful.

27.74 Surely thy Lord knows what their hearts conceal, and
                        what they publish

27.75                   And not a thing is
                  there hidden in heaven and earth
                  but it is in a Manifest Book.

57.22       No affliction befalls in the earth
            or in yourselves, but it is in a
            Book, before We create it; that is
                  easy for God;

57.23       that you may not grieve for what
            escapes you, nor rejoice in what has
            come to you; God loves not any man
                  proud and boastful,

57.24       such as are niggardly, and bid men
            to be niggardly. And whosoever
            turns away, God is the All-sufficient,
                  the All-laudable.

Nations Books

45.27 To God belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth.
            And on the day when the Hour is come,
            upon that day the vain-doers shall lose.

45.28 And thou shalt see every nation hobbling on their knees,
      every natin being summoned unto its Book: "Today
      you shall be recompensed for that you were doing.

45.29 This is Our Book, that speaks against you the truth;
      We have been registering all that you were doing."

Personal Books

17.13 And every man - We have fastened to him
      his bird of omen upon his neck; and We
      shall bring forth for him, on the Day
      of Resurrection, a book he shall find
                  spread wide open.

17.14 "Read thy book! Thy soul suffices thee
      this day as a reckoner against thee."

17.15 Whosoever is guided, is only guided
      to his own gain, and whosoever goes
      astray, it is only to his own loss;
      no soul laden bears the load of another.
      We never chastise, until We send forth
                  a Messenger.

17.71       On the day when We shall call all men
            with their record, and whoso is given his
            book in his right hand - those shall read
            their book, and they shall not be wronged
                  a single date-thread.

18.46 Wealth and sons are the adornment of the present world;
      but the abiding things, the deeds of righteousness,
      are better with God in reward, and better in hope.

18.47 And on the day We shall set the mountains in motion,
      so that We leave not so much as one of them behind;

18.48 "You have come to Us, as We created you upon the first time;
      nay, you asserted We should not appoint for you a tryst."

18.49 And the Book shall be set in place; and thou wilt see
      the sinners fearful at what is in it, and saying,
      "Alas for us! How is it with this Book, that it leaves
      nothing behind, small or great, but it has numbered it?"
      And they shall find all they wrought present, and thy Lord
                  shall not wrong anyone.

23.62       We charge not any soul save to its capacity,
            and with Us is a Book speaking truth, and
                  they shall not be wronged.

Revealed Books

Unity not Adversity

2.113 The Jews say, "The Christians stand not on anything";
      the Christians say, "The Jews stand not on anything";
      yet they recite the Book. So too the ignorant
      say the like of them. God shall decide between them
      on the Day of Resurrection touching their differences.

2.114 And who does greater evil than he who bars
      God's places of worship, so that His Name
      be not rehearsed in them, and strives to destroy them?

3.79  It belongs not to any mortal that God should
      give him the Book, the Judgement, the Prophethood,
      then he should say to men, "Be you servants to me
      apart from God." Rather, "Be you masters in
      that you know the Book, and in that you study."

29.46       Dispute not with the People of the Book
            save in the fairer manner, except for
            those of them that do wrong; and say,
            "We believe in what has been sent down
            to us, and what has been sent down to you;
            our God and your God is One, and to Him
                  we have surrendered."

4.54        Or are they jealous of the people
            for the bounty that God has given them?
            Yet We gave the people of Abraham
            the Book and the Wisdom, and We gave them
                  a mighty kingdom.

6.154 Then We gave Moses the Book, complete
      for him who does good, and distinguishing
      every thing, and as a guidance and a mercy;
      haply they would believe in the encounter
            with their Lord.

5.51        And We have sent down to thee the Book
            with the truth, confirming the Book
            that was before it, and assuring it.
            So judge between them according to what
            God has sent down, and do not follow
            their caprices, to forsake the truth
            that has come to thee. To every one
            of you We have appointed a right way
                  and an open road.
            If God had willed, He would have made you
            one nation; but that He may try you
            in what has come to you. So be you forward
            in good works; unto God shall you
            return, all together; and He will tell you
            of that whereon you were at variance.

Qur'an

Iqra

7.52        And We have brought to them a Book
            that We have well distinguished,
            resting on knowledge, a guidance
            and a mercy unto a people
                  that believe.

7.53        Do they look for aught else but its
                  interpretation?
            The day its interpretation comes,
            those who before forgot it shall say,
            "Indeed, our Lord's Messengers came
                  with the truth.

12.1                    Alif Lam Ra
            Those are the signs of the Manifest Book.

12.2        We have sent it down as an Arabic Koran;
                  haply you will understand.

10.37       This Koran could not have been forged
            apart from God; but it is a confirmation
            of what is before it, and a distinguishing
            of the Book, wherein is no doubt, from
                  the Lord of all Being.

10.38       Or do they say, "Why, he has forged it"?
            Say: "Then produce a sura like it, and
            call on whom you can, apart from God,
                  if you speak truly."

56.75       No! I swear by the fallings of the stars

56.76       (and that is indeed a mighty oath, did
                  you but know it)

56.77             it is surely a noble Koran

56.78             in a hidden Book

56.79             none but the purified shall touch,

56.80       a sending down from the Lord of all Being.

The Essence of the Book

3.7   It is He who sent down upon thee the Book,
      wherein are verses clear that are the Essence
      of the Book, and others ambiguous.
      As for those in whose hearts is swerving,
      they follow the ambiguous part, desiring
      dissension, and desiring its interpretation;
      and none knows its interpretation, save
      only God. And those firmly rooted in
      knowledge say, "We believe in it; all
      is from our Lord"; yet none remembers, but men
            possessed of minds.

43.1                    Ha Mim

43.2              By the Clear Book,

43.3        behold, We have made it an Arabic Koran;
                  haply you will understand;

43.4  and behold, it is in the Essence of the Book, with Us;
                  sublime indeed, wise.

13.38       And We sent Messengers before thee, and We
            assigned to them wives, and seed; and it was
            not for any Messengers to bring a sign, but
            by God's leave. Every term has a Book.

13.39             God blots out, and He establishes
            whatsoever He will; and with Him is the
                        Essence of the Book.
