Originally I was asked to
provide some material about the two Eids, but that kind of expanded
as it was soon realised that it was not really possible to deal with
the Eids without dealing with Saum and Hajj. And if I was writing
about Saum and Hajj, they really needed to be put in the perspective
of the other three of the Five Pillars. And to tie them all together
I wrote a brief overview and a somewhat lengthier section on
the Qur'an and Sunnah. And then they thought it would be a good idea
to add something about muslim concerns regarding Food & Drink,
as that seemed to be the aspect of Islam with the highest priority
in the eyes of most of the muslims with whom they came in contact.
Finally we added a glossary, and ended up with what you have
here. Anyway, teachers seemed to like what we came up with, as the
pack obviously got passed around way beyond the borders of
Strathclyde. I like to think that might have been because although
teachers were now expected to be able to introduce their pupils to
Islam in the classroom, many found it not only unintelligible but
repellant, and I managed to show them a different way of seeing it
and understanding it. I found teachers using it in the far north of
Scotland, and in the south of Wales, and from those random
discoveries I suspect it reached places around England (and who
knows where else). Unfortunately the only scanner available to me
wasn't really up to the job, but as teachers had obviously found the
originals so useful, I decided to rebuild the pages for the website,
as I think it was the words that were most important, rather than
what are now some rather blurred and jaggy illustrations.
