Five Signs of God

We don't see too much of the sun in Glasgow, so when we do it tends to be uppermost in everybody's minds.

Morning Thought - 24/07/94

The summer sun has been shining on my garden of late, and the plants have been loving it, but as any gardener knows, the phases of the moon also have their effect. The sun, the moon and the stars are frequently mentioned in the Qur'an as Signs of God, indicating the existence of the Creator.

Just as the creatures of the earth are interlinked and dependent on each other for their existence, so we are interlinked and dependent on the universe at large. It's easy to see the influence of the sun, providing our light and heat each day, but the months are also there, and the pull of the moon affects plants and people just as it pulls the seas into the tides.

We are affected by our rotation round the sun, through the seasons and the years, just as we are by the solar flares and sunspots affecting the radio waves and the weather. It seems that although we are small and short lived, we are affected by the distant stars and galaxies, and just as our bodies are connected to the universe at a level too subtle for our conscious awareness, so our souls are given to share in the eternity of their Creator.
