Prayer for the Day - 15/02/94
In
the way that it is impossible to reduce a symphony to a few selected
bars, how much harder it is to reduce the Qur'an to a few sentences
taken out of context. But from it's complex web, I have plucked a
few words from the chapter by the name of Iron, verses 1-6, 20 and
21.
All that is in the heavens and
the earth magnifies God; He is the All-mighty, the All-wise. To Him
belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; He gives life, and
makes to die, and He is powerful over everything. He is the First
and Last, the Outward and Inward. He has knowledge of everything.
It is He that created the
heavens and the earth in six days then seated Himself upon the
Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth, and what comes out
from it, what comes down from heaven, and what goes up to it. He is
with you wherever you are; and God sees the things you do.
To Him belongs the Kingdom of
the heavens and the earth; and to Him all matters are returned. He
makes the night to enter into the day, and makes the day to enter
into the night. He knows the thoughts within the breasts.
And in the world to come there
is a terrible chastisement, and forgiveness from God and good
pleasure; and the present life is but the joy of delusion. Race to
forgiveness from your Lord, and a Garden the breadth whereof is as
the breadth of heaven and earth, made ready for those who believe in
God and His Messengers. That is the bounty of God: He gives it unto
whomsoever He will; and God is of bounty abounding.
Around
us, all of Creation sings God's glory, the birds on the trees, the
whales in the oceans, and the wind in the telephone wires, all sing
God's praise as part of their nature. But mankind has been created
differently. We have been given a choice of whether to praise God's
glory or not, even the freedom if we wish to deny God's existence
altogether. For it is part of the nature of the human that our
belief in God is a free choice. But even if we do choose not to
deny, why do we praise? Surely any God worthy of the definition is
beyond the reach of our limited capacity to praise. Indeed, our song
of praise is not for God's benefit but our own.
Overflowing
with the joyful praise that springs from gratitude is the natural
state of mankind when facing God's glory and recognising God's
bounty. And God hears the one who praises, and is most generous,
teaching mankind the as yet unknown, so that we may understand our
life experience, and know a little of what and why we praise. The
search for knowledge is a sacred duty for muslims, but our knowledge
is limited by our capacity to understand.
We
use the names of qualities for God, but we only comprehend an
earthly trace of the All-mighty and All-wise, just as our knowledge
is only an earthly shadow of the Divine knowledge. God's knowledge
encompasses every leaf that grows and falls, and every grain of sand
that shifts beneath the waves. And God sees everything, and never
sleeps.
Death
is much like sleep, a natural process, and God makes death come into
our lives, and then makes new life after death. Then we find out
what we mean when we say that God knows the thoughts within us, and
how our lives have been recorded, and how we receive the just reward
of the good and the bad of our thoughts and actions.
We
can escape the eventual just desserts of our guilty secrets,
however, through feeling the pain of sincere regret in this life,
and yearning for God's forgiveness and good pleasure, and
fortunately God our judge is the Most-Generous and All-merciful.
In
the Name of the One Who is All-merciful and All-compassionate. O
God! All of our praise belongs to you. You are the One Whose mercy
knows no bounds or limitations. You are the Truth we must face on
our ultimate judgement day. Help us to see the best way to serve
You. For You are the One we were created to serve, and the only One
Who can help us. Amen
