Weather
and
Landscape

In what kinds of places do muslims make their homes?

What kind of weather do they live in?

Well, if you look at a globe of the world it is mostly sea,

but it has large bits of land all around it,

and muslims live in most of the places on most of those bits of land.

And on those bits of land some parts stick up into the sky as mountains,

and around the edges other bits are coasts,

low down next to the sea.

And the whole globe turns around under the sun each day,

sharing its light and warmth.

But some parts of the world around the middle,

the bit we call the equator,

are closer to the sun during the day

and get more heat than other parts.

While at the very top and bottom,

the north and south poles,

they get so little heat they are covered in snow and ice.

And as the world turns,

the winds above it swirl around and push the clouds along with them,

to drop rain or snow on the lands below,

and the mixture of sun wind and rain gives those lands their weather.

And different plants need different weather, and grow in different places,

and the shape of the land and the things that grow there makes places look a certain way,

a look that we call their landscape.

So there are places where it is hot and wet,

where thick jungles grow,

and muslims live there.

And there are places where there are mountains where it is cold

and in the winter they have thick snow,

and muslims live there.

And there are places where it is very hot,

with hardly any rain

and the land underfoot is dry earth or sand,

and muslims live there.

And there are places that have great lakes,

filled by rivers that run down from distant mountains,

and muslims live there.

And there are places where the summer is a little bit warm,

but most days have a little bit of rain,

and where the winter is a little bit cold

with a little bit of snow.

And the mountains are not very tall, more like hills,

but the rivers that run down from them fill lots of lakes.

And sometimes it gets windy,

but not usually enough to blow a house down.

And there are little bits of forest,

but mostly what grows is grass for animals to eat.

And nowhere is very far from the sea,

which is full of fish

that can be caught to eat.

Places just like Scotland,

and muslims live there.
