Some time in the 1980's, on a trip to the Islamic Foundation somebody handed me a proposal for a children's book of poems that had recently been submitted to them (I think by a Malaysian student). Unfortunately the language of the verses was clearly not up to the mark, and they asked me if I could rewrite them. So I rewrote a few and suggested an overall restructuring of the book, but as with so many things Islamic it vanished into a black hole of good intentions, nobody bothered to get back to me, and so I never finished it. I did adapt a couple of the verses for Insight magazine later, but the book didn't happen. Anyway, if some Malaysian somewhere sees what's below and thinks I've stolen her original idea, I'm sorry, but that's what happened.

SIGNRHYMES

"Allah"

Who is Allah?

Allah is the One

who made everything out of nothing.

Can we see what Allah has made?

”The Sky”

Look at the sky!  Who made the sky?

The sky is blue on a sunny day,
a roof of light for our work and play,
When we look at all that we know and love
in the light of Allah from the sky above.
No pillars hold up this tent of blue,
with the coming of night it just fades from view,
And the grey and white clouds that tumble around
turn pink and red as the sun goes down.
Soon moonlight reflects upon you and on me,
and a sky full of stars high above us we see.

Allah made the sky out of nothing!
            Allah created the sky.

”The Sun”

Look at the sun!  Who made the sun?

Above the horizon, out of the night
rises the sun bringing warmth and light.
As it swims through the sky stretching shade on the ground
see it guiding the sundial shadow around.
In this way the sun shows us five times every day
when it's best if we stop what we're doing, and pray.
Time for praising and thanking Allah, the One
who gives us each day the shining sun.

Allah made the sun out of nothing!
            Allah created the sun.

”The Moon”

Look at the moon!  Who made the moon?

When night shadows gather and daylight is done,
the moon crosses the sky on the trail of the sun.
But as days turn to weeks the moon changes as well,
sometimes round like a ball, sometimes cupped like a bell.
Growing big, the moon washes the world in pale light,
then grows thin leaving us wrapped in darkness at night.
Until bent like a palm bough the moon reappears,
helping us count the months that divide up the years.

Allah made the moon out of nothing!
            Allah created the moon.

”The Stars”

Look at the stars!  Who made the stars?

Above our heads on moonless nights
the sky still shines with sparkling lights.
Bowing to their maker as they fall towards the West,
the stars are fixed to guide us on the way that is the best,
Signposts for the traveller who on night-time journey roams
and a map to bring the sailors back safely to their homes,
Until each early morning when the stars are veiled away
by the going of the night and the coming of the day.

Allah made the stars out of nothing!
            Allah created the stars.

”The Winds”

Look at the winds! Who made the winds?

In between the land and sky the winds are turning round,
spreading pollen in the flowers and seeds across the ground,
Pushing round the clouds above, swirling in the fallen leaves,
scattering the bonfire ashes, blowing smells upon the breeze.
But the gentle summer winds can turn to winter's gales that freeze,
drowning ships in giant waves, destroying houses, felling trees.
When we see the trees uprooted, do we see how weak we are
compared to air that moves about us by the power of Allah.

Allah made the winds out of nothing!
            Allah created the winds.
