those are the Signs
of the Clear Book
We will tell you
some of the story of
Moses and Pharaoh
the truth
for a people who believe
Pharaoh
had made
himself
high and mighty
in the land
and divided
those who lived there
into different groups
bullying
one group of them
killing their sons
and keeping
their women
alive
because he was
one of those who
spread sickness
and We wanted
to show favour
to those that were
suffering
in the land
and to make them leaders
and those who receive
and to settle them
in the land
and through them
to show
Pharaoh and Haman
and their armies
what they had been
afraid of
so We revealed
to Moses' mother
"Feed him at your breast
then when you are
afraid for him
put him in the river
and do not be
afraid for him
and do not
feel sorrow
for We shall
return him to you
and will make him
one of the Messengers"
then the family
of Pharaoh
picked him out
so he might be
an enemy
a cause of sorrow
to them
certainly
Pharaoh and Haman
and their armies
were evil doers
said
Pharaoh's wife
"He will be a comfort
for me and you
do not kill him
perhaps
he will be
of value to us
or we could
adopt him
as our son"
and they did not know
next day
the heart of
Moses' mother
was empty
and she almost
gave him away
except that
We strengthened
her heart
so she could be
among those who
believe
and she said to his sister
"Follow him"
and she watched him
from far away
and they did not know
now We made it happen
from before
that he would not feed
at the breast of any
foster mother
so she said
"Shall I take you
to the people
of a family
who will
take care of him
for you
and look after him?"
so We returned him
to his mother
so she might
feel comfort
and not sorrow
and so she might know
that God's promise
is true
but most of them
do not know
and when he was
fully grown
to his full strength
We gave him
judgement
and knowledge
and in that way
We reward
those who do good
and he entered the city
not noticed by its people
and there found
two men fighting
and one was from
his own clan
and the other was from
one of its enemies
then the one that was
of his own clan
called out to him
for help against
the one that was his enemy
so Moses struck him
and killed him
and said
"This is the work of Satan
he is a clear enemy
who leads to
the wrong way"
he said
"My Liege
I have done myself wrong
forgive me"
so God forgave him
for Hu is
the Most-Forgiving
the Ever-Merciful
he said
"My Liege
because
You have blessed me
I will never be an ally
of those who do wrong"
now in the morning
he was in the city
afraid and on guard
and he saw the man
who had called for his help
the day before
and he called out to him
again
Moses said to him
"Clearly you are
a trouble maker"
but when he was going
to strike the man
who was an enemy
to both of them
the man said
"Moses
do you want to kill me
just as you killed someone
yesterday?
you only want to be
a tyrant in the land
you do not want to be
one of those who
make things right"
then a man came running
from the other side
of the city
and he said
"Moses
the Council
are plotting
to kill you
leave
I am giving you
good advice"
so he left there
afraid and on guard
he said
"My Liege
rescue me
from those who do evil"
and when he
turned his face
towards Midian
he said
"It may be
that my Liege
will guide me
on the right way"
and when he came
to the waters of Midian
he found there
a group of people
drawing water
and he found there
separate from the rest
two women
holding back their flocks
he said
"What are you doing?"
they said
"We may not draw water
until those shepherds
drive their sheep away
and our father
is very old"
so he drew water for them
then turned away
into the shade
and said
"My Liege
surely I need
whatever good
you send down on me"
then one of
the two women
came to him
walking modestly
and said
"My father
has invited you
so that he may pay you
a wage for your
having drawn water for us"
so when he came to him
and had told him his story
he said
"Do not be afraid
you have escaped from
a people who do evil"
and one of
the two women
said
"Father
hire him
surely the best man
you can hire
is someone who is strong
and can be trusted"
he said
"I would like
to marry you
to one of my daughters
on condition
that you work for me
for eight years
if you work for ten
that will be
of your own choosing
I do not want
to be hard on you
you will surely find me
if God wills
one of those who
do what is right"
he said
"So let it be agreed
between me and you
whichever
of the two terms
I work for
there will be
no bad feeling
from me
and God is guardian
over what we say"
so when Moses
had completed his term
and left with his family
he noticed a fire
on the side of
Mount Tur
and said to his family
"Wait here
I see a fire
perhaps I will
bring you back
news from there
or a blazing branch
from the fire
so you can
warm yourselves"
but when he came to it
a voice called out
from the right bank
of a dry river bed
in the holy valley
coming from the tree
"Moses
I am God
the Liege of
all the worlds
throw down your staff"
and when he saw it
slithering like a snake
he turned and ran away
and did not turn back
"Moses
come forward
and do not be afraid
be sure that
you are safe
put your hand close
next to your breast
and it will come out
shining white
with no harm to it
and hold your arms
close to you
so you will not be afraid
these are two proofs
from your Liege
to Pharaoh
and his Council
for surely they are
a wicked people"
he said
"My Liege
I have killed someone
from among them
and I am afraid
that they will kill me
and my brother Aaron
is a better speaker
than I am
send him with me
as a helper
and to confirm
that I speak the truth
because I am afraid
they will call me a liar"
said Hu
"We will make you stronger
with your brother
and by Our Signs
We will give you authority
so they cannot touch you
you
and those who follow you
will be the winners"
so when Moses
came to them
with Our Clear Signs
they said
"This is nothing but
magic he has invented
we never heard of this
through our families
from long ago"
but Moses said
"My Liege
knows very well
who comes guided by Hu
and who will have
the best home in the end
surely those who do evil
will not be successful"
and Pharaoh said
"Council
I do not know
of any god for you
apart from me
Haman
light a fire for me
to bake clay
and build me a tower
so I can climb up to
Moses' god
for I think that he is
a liar"
and he grew proud
in the land
he and his troops
with no right to be
and they thought that
they would not be
returned to Us
so We seized him
and his army
and threw them
into the sea
see how they
came to an end
those who did evil
and We made them
leaders
in calling to the Fire
and on the Day of Rising
they will have no help
and We followed them
through this world
with a curse
and on the Day of Rising
they will be among
those who are rejected
and We gave Moses
the Book
after destroying
the people from before
for humankind to see
and as a guide and a mercy
so hopefully
they might remember
you were not on
the western side
when We gave Moses
the command
you did not witness it
but We raised up
more generations
with long lives
and you did not live
with the people of Midian
reading them Our Signs
but We did send
Messengers
you were not
on the side of Mount Tur
when We called
it is mercy from your Liege
so you may warn a people
to whom
no warner came
before you
so hopefully
they might remember
or
if a disaster fell on them
because of what
their hands have done
then they might say
"Our Liege
why did You not send
a Messenger to us
so we could
follow Your Signs
and be with
those who believe?"
but when
the truth came to them
from Us
they said
"Why has he not been given
the kind of thing
that Moses was given?"
but did they not also
refuse to believe in
what Moses was given
beforehand?
they said
"Two kinds of sorcery
each one
backing up the other"
they said
"We do not believe
either of them"
say
"Bring a Book
from God
that guides
better than these
and follow it
if you speak the truth"
then
if they do not answer you
know that they are only
following their urges
and who is further astray
than those who
follow their urges
without being guided
by God
surely God does not guide
those who do evil
now We have
brought them
the Word
hopefully
they will
remember
those to whom
We gave the Book
before this
believe in it
when it is read to them
they say
"We believe in it
surely it is the truth
from our Liege
and indeed
we had surrendered
before it"
these will be given
their reward
twice over
because they wait
patiently
and turn aside evil
with good
and spend from
what We have
provided for them
when they hear idle gossip
they turn away from it
and say
"We have what we do
and you what you do
peace be upon you
we are not looking for
those who are ignorant"
you do not guide
the one you want to
but God guides
whoever Hu wills
and knows very well
those who are guided
they say
"If we are guided by you
we will be snatched away
from our land"
have We not
made ready for you
a safe holy place
where the fruits
of everything
are collected
as provision
from Us?
but most of them
do not know
how many a city
We have destroyed
that once boasted
wealth and ease
those are their homes
not lived in since
except for a few
We get everything
in the end
but your Liege
never destroyed cities
until Hu sent
to their mother city
a Messenger
to read Our Signs to them
and We never
destroyed cities
unless
those who lived there
did evil deeds
whatever
you have been given
is the enjoyment
of the present life
what makes it beautiful
but what is with God
is better
and longer lasting
will you not understand?
what
are those to whom
We have promised
a fair promise
and they receive it
like those to whom
We have given
enjoyment in this life
only to be punished
on the Day of Rising?
on the day
when Hu will call to them
and Hu will say
"Where are they now
those you insisted
were My partner-gods?"
and those against whom
the Word is carried out
will say
"Our Liege
those we turned
towards what is wrong
we only turned them
to the same way
that we had been
led astray
we are innocent
it was not us they served"
it will be said
"Now call out
to your partner-gods"
and they will call to them
but they will not answer them
and they will see
the punishment
if only they had been guided
upon the day
when Hu shall call to them
and Hu shall say
"What answer did you give
the Messengers?"
upon that day
the news will confuse them
and they will not
ask each other
but for those who ask
to be forgiven
and believe
and do good deeds
hopefully they will be
among the successful
your Liege creates
whatever Hu wills
and Hu chooses
no other has the choice
Glory be to God
praise Hu
high above
their partner-gods
and your Liege knows
what they hide
within their breast
and what they show
in public
Hu is God
there is no god
other than Hu
all praise belongs to Hu
in what has been
and what is to come
the Judgement
belongs to Hu
and to Hu
you will be returned
say
"What do you think?
if God should
make you have
nothing but night
until the Day of Rising
what god
other than God
would bring you
light to see by?
will you not hear?"
say
"What do you think?
if God should
make you have
nothing but day
until the Day of Rising
what god
other than God
would bring you
night to rest in?
will you not see?"
from Hu's mercy
Hu has made
night and day for you
to rest in
and to search out
Hu's reward
so that hopefully
you will be thankful
on the day when
Hu will call to them
and Hu shall say
"Where are
My partner-gods
you said were real?"
and We will draw out
from every people
a witness
and say
"Bring your proof"
then they will know
that Truth is God's
and what they invented
will be lost to them
now Korah was one of
the people of Moses
but he lorded himself
over them
because we had given him
treasures
so much so
that even the keys for them
were too heavy
for a group of
strong men
to carry
when his people
said to him
"Do not take joy
in how much
more than us
you have
God does not love
that kind of joy
but search for
the life to come
with what
God has given you
and do not forget
your share of
this present world
and do good
just as God has been
good to you
and do not try to
spread sickness
in the world
surely
God does not love
those who
spread sickness"
he said
"What I have been given
is only because of
knowledge that I have"
what
did he not know
that God had destroyed
before him
generations
stronger than him
and in greater numbers?
but those who do evil
will not be questioned
about their evil
so he went out
before his people
in all his finery
and those who wanted
the present life
said
"If only we had the like of
what Korah has been given
surely he is
a man of mighty fortune"
but those to whom
knowledge had been given
said
"Woe upon you
the reward of God
is better for those
who believe
and do good deeds
and no-one will receive it
except the patient"
so We made the earth
swallow him
and his house
and there was
no crowd to help him
only God
so he had no help
and in the morning
those who had wanted
to be in his place
the day before
were saying
"God hands out
or holds back
whatever Hu provides
to whoever Hu wills
of Hu's servants
had God not
showed favour to us
Hu would have made us
be swallowed as well
those who are
ungrateful
do not prosper"
that is the final home
that We give to those
who do not want
excess in the world
nor to spread sickness
in the end
the best outcome
belongs to those who are
Mindful of God
whoever brings
a good deed
will have better than it
and for those who bring
an evil deed
those who have done
evil deeds
will only be repaid
for what they were doing
Hu gave you
this Reading to bear
and will surely bring you
back home again
say
"My Liege knows full well
who comes guided
and who has clearly taken
the wrong way"
you did not want
to be given the Book
unless it be a mercy
from your Liege
so do not be a supporter
of those who are
ungrateful
do not let them
turn you away from
the Signs of God
after they have been
sent down to you
and call out to your Liege
and do not be with
those who worship
partner-gods
and do not call out to
another god with God
there is no god but Hu
all things pass away
except Hu's Face
Judgement
is from Hu
and to Hu
you shall return
